Liam Berg was never meant to be a hero. He was a Swedish-born orphan raised in foster homes across Europe, eventually settling in the gritty, sweat-stained confines of Mike's Gym in Sunderland. Working as a professional sparring partner, his entire existence was defined by taking punches without throwing them back, acting as a human punching bag for arrogant bullies like Leo. But on the eve of his departure from Earth, Liam decides he has had enough of being passive. He steps into the ring with Leo, endures a vicious combination, and unleashes a brutal, jaw-cracking uppercut that knocks the gym bully unconscious. With his employer and hangers-on shouting in confusion, Liam walks out the door and boards a flight to Indonesia, leaving a mundane life of abuse behind for a destiny beyond the stars.
The world Liam leaves behind has been forever altered by the arrival of mysterious, shimmering portals. Humanity has discovered magic, and a massive gateway in the Indian Ocean known as Portal Home has become the ultimate gold rush for fortune seekers, exiles, and outcasts. Upon stepping through the portal into the essence-rich realm of Ademia, Liam is stripped of his earthly possessions and granted a clean slate. He is diagnosed with Starved Growth, a temporary trait that accelerates his skill acquisition to help him catch up with the magical natives of this harsh universe. When choosing his path, Liam makes a decision that will define his entire journey. He selects the Fighter class but pairs it with the Path of Fortitude, choosing a Tier Five negative quirk called Enforced Anti-violence and a Tier Four positive quirk called Passive Power.
This volatile combination completely locks Liam out of his offensive talent tree, making it impossible for him to wield weapons or directly attack his foes. In exchange, his positive quirk doubles his passive and defensive damage, improves passive talent gains by fifty percent, and effectively doubles his Fortitude. Armed with a massive bone shield and a rusty swordbreaker, Liam must navigate a world where monsters and hostile factions rule. He can only fight back by deflecting enemy momentum and reflecting their own damage back at them through the sheer force of his defense. This passive-aggressive style transforms him from a fragile newcomer into an unshakeable mountain, ready to conquer a realm where power is the only true law.
Today was the day I would stop being passive and take my destiny into my own hands!
Passive Aggressive
Liam arrives at Portal Home and steps into Ademia, where he joins a ragtag recruitment group known as the U-Nerds. Under the guidance of Major Pain, a seemingly lazy commander with a penchant for terrible puns, Liam is grouped with a bizarre squad of eccentric outcasts. This includes Elio di Fiore, a blind Italian Mage who took his blindness as a negative quirk to double his magical power, Ciara Doyle, a stoic sniper hired to be Elio's eyes, and a married podcaster duo named Nix and Haddock. Haddock is a builder who cannot use the system for permanent structures but can summon temporary walls, while Nix is a Mage who can only target areas with massive elemental forces like flash floods. Together, they venture out into the Killing Grounds to hunt Core Leechers, but their lack of coordination quickly turns their first excursion into a disaster. Elio behaves with supreme arrogance, treating the others like expendable tools, while Nix struggles with her high mana costs. When the monstrous Leechers attack, Liam is forced to act as the frontline tank, using his new Wave of Reflection talent to redirect damage back at the beasts. The battle escalates when Elio recklessly casts a massive Missile Storm directly on top of Liam to steal the kills, nearly ending Liam's life if not for Elio's companion Ciara Doyle helping pull him away and Haddock intervening with a temporary stone shelter. Though they survive the encounter, the betrayal is too much to bear. Liam confronts the blind Mage, flings him to the ground, and officially dissolves the partnership, choosing to strike out with Nix and Haddock instead. But as they begin their slow march back to the human settlement with their hard-won loot, a sudden, soul-rattling scream echoes across the flatlands, signaling that the safety they once took for granted is about to be shattered forever. They realize that the competitive nature of the other factions is the least of their worries, as the monstrous native inhabitants of Ademia are beginning to mobilize their forces for an all-out assault against the human interlopers.
Liam rejects toxic elite players, establishing a loyal team with Nix and Haddock based on mutual defensive synergy and trust.
The fragile peace of the human settlement is utterly destroyed when a massive army of Kadren monsters launches a coordinated assault on the Ever Steady. Led by a colossal, Level Thirty-Two Higher Skreeling, the beasts breach the stone walls, sending the defenders into a state of absolute panic. Liam and Elizabeth, a local alchemist, are caught in the chaos as they try to salvage healing supplies. The battle turns hopeless as the legendary human champion known as the Titan is brutally killed, leaving the frontlines completely exposed. The Higher Skreeling rampages directly toward Liam, who has no choice but to stand his ground with his battered bone shield. Using his Wave of Reflection talent, Liam absorbs the momentum of the charging behemoth, dealing a fatal blow but leaving himself on the very brink of death with only eighteen health remaining. He wakes up amidst the smoldering ruins of the camp to find Elizabeth dead and the human forces completely routed. The surviving humans are either slaughtered or captured by the Kadren to be kept as thralls through their unique slave bonds. Realizing that the Ever Steady has fallen, Liam is forced to flee into the wilderness, pursued relentlessly by a cunning, Level Twenty-Two Lesser Glimmerscale. The lizard stalks him through the dark, raining fiery missiles that slowly destroy Liam's armor and shield. Running on empty and suffering from multiple debilitating debuffs, Liam uses a desperate survival tactic from Earth, covering himself in freezing mud to mask his heat signature from the predator. He endures a night of agonizing cold, but the gamble pays off, allowing him to survive the night and unlock a rare version of his Self-Heal skill. As the morning sun rises over the foggy plains, Liam realizes he is entirely alone in a hostile world, and must find a way to grow stronger if he ever hopes to rescue his enslaved kin from the clutches of the monstrous horde.
The destruction of humanity's main base forces Liam to adapt, unlocking rare survival skills and committing to a long-term guerrilla growth strategy.
Liam spends the next several days grinding for levels in the wilderness, targeting slow but deadly Vicious Millipedes to upgrade his defensive capabilities. He refines his passive combat style, learning to intentionally take poison damage to level his resistances while relying on his rare Higher Self-Heal to keep him healthy. After reaching Level Fifteen, he decides to climb a massive cliff face to avoid a guarded pass, utilizing his newly upgraded Climbing and Athletics skills to scale the vertical rock wall. Atop the ridge, he encounters Cuilcis, a golden-skinned Tibidi Crafter, and his mercenary escorts who immediately try to rob him. Using his newly maxed-out Wheel of Magic talent, Liam unleashes a relentless barrage of elemental missiles, killing the mercenaries and forcing Cuilcis to surrender. Recognizing the value of Cuilcis's vast hoard of knowledge, Liam spares the merchant in exchange for safe passage to Last Chance, a lawless shanty town of outcasts and exiles. In the city, Liam manages to rent a secure room, soak in a magical bath, and strike a deal with a legendary Larian smith named Stalwart to craft a custom steel tower shield. To secure the materials, Liam leads a collection team into a nest of cute but deadly Lyrian Rastlers, who spit potent acid that dissolves his remaining armor. Liam endures the agonizing burns, using his Wheel of Magic to wipe out the beasts while the collectors gather the precious acid alloy. Upon returning to the city, Liam is reunited with Nix, Haddock, and their new Canadian companion Steve, who has a powerful invisibility talent. Just as they celebrate their reunion, a massive shadow falls over them as an enraged, four-armed Gold-Rot Fighter named Adrasteina storms the tavern, seeking to murder Cuilcis for his deceptive trades and threatening to destroy anyone who stands in her path. The confrontation escalates rapidly, forcing Liam to step in as the protector of the town's most valuable knowledge source.
Liam establishes a reputation in Last Chance, gathering crucial resources, upgraded gear, and reuniting with his core team of survivors.
Liam and his team are forced into a brutal battle against Adrasteina, one of Last Chance's absolute untouchables. Haddock quickly reshapes the battlefield, creating a deep earthen pit to trap the four-armed warrior, but her immense strength and high-level defensive talents allow her to shrug off their initial attacks. She launches a relentless flurry of punches, bypassing Liam's shield and nearly beating him to death with her overwhelming power. In a desperate bid for survival, Nix uses her new Earthen Gauntlet talent to summon a giant clay hand that grabs Liam, physically maneuvering him to block Adrasteina's blows while Steve strikes from invisibility. Nix then unleashes a Delayed Firebomb directly into the pit, engulfing both Liam and Adrasteina in a massive explosion. Though Liam suffers severe burns, his double Fortitude and passive resistances keep him standing, and the combined damage allows his Wheel of Magic to finally put the untouchable down. The victory earns the team massive experience, propelling Liam to Level Twenty-Five and unlocking the Passive Specialist class evolution. With his new Mirror of All talent, Liam can now project his immense Fortitude to manipulate the emotions of his enemies, turning their anger into an unstoppable taunt. The team blackmails Cuilcis into teaching them the secrets of higher-rarity skills, allowing Liam to upgrade his Shield, Running, and Self-Heal to rare status. Armed with a newly crafted steel tower shield and a powerful plan, Liam leads a pack of fifty Kadren monsters directly to the gates of Last Chance, using them as a distraction to unite the lawless factions. He prepares to launch a daring rescue mission to free the thousands of human slaves held in the Kadren pens, turning the tide of the war and establishing humanity as a force to be reckoned with. The stage is set for a massive clash of civilizations, as the passive-aggressive hero prepares to strike back at the monstrous overlords of the Torn Divide.
Liam unlocks his class evolution and upgrades his skills, transforming his passive build into an active force for human liberation.
Liam is a Swedish-born former sparring partner whose life on Earth was defined by taking punches. Upon entering Ademia, he chooses a highly restrictive build by taking the Enforced Anti-violence negative quirk and the Passive Power positive quirk, making him unable to directly attack but doubling his defensive capabilities. His core stakes revolve around surviving the hostile wilderness and rescuing the thousands of humans enslaved by the Kadren. His trump cards include a newly crafted steel tower shield, the Wave of Reflection talent that redirects damage, and the Mirror of All talent which allows him to taunt enemies by projecting his immense Fortitude. Throughout the plot, he transitions from a lone survivor running from predators to a legendary class-evolved Passive Specialist leading a rebellion.
Nix is a former podcaster who enters Ademia alongside her husband Haddock, choosing a specialized magical build that trades direct targeting for massive area-of-effect elemental spells. Her negative quirk prevents her from directly attacking single targets, but her positive quirk doubles her Mental Power and grants her control over elemental forces beyond their initial release. Her stakes are tied to building a secure home and protecting her friends from the dangers of the Torn Divide. Her primary trump cards are the Flash Flood talent, which can drown entire packs of monsters, and the Delayed Firebomb, which bypasses her targeting restrictions. She plays a crucial role in defeating Adrasteina and consistently acts as the emotional anchor and tactical coordinator for the team.
Cuilcis is a junior member of the Tethered, an organization that buys and sells valuable knowledge throughout Ademia. As a Tibidi, he is biologically incapable of telling a direct lie, a trait his faction turns into a commercial advantage, though he is highly skilled at using evasive wording to protect his interests. His stakes are centered around establishing a commercial monopoly in Last Chance and proving his worth to his superiors. His trump cards include a vast repository of information on skills, rarities, and monster weaknesses, as well as a mana-propelled cart and various crafted potions. After being spared by Liam, he acts as a reluctant advisor and teacher, though he remains a dangerous opportunist who is always looking for a way to turn the team's achievements to his own profit.
