In the sprawling vertical city of Skyhope, where islands float through an eternal yellow sky and the Mistwatcher's gaze is the only god, sixteen-year-old Vita is a nameless street rat. She steals bread from baker Grig not out of malice but from the gnawing, constant hunger that has defined her entire existence. Her body is emaciated, her life a blur of starvation and survival, and she has long accepted that she is worthless. When Grig finally catches her and beats her bloody in an alley, she expects to die like so many other nameless urchins before her. But in her desperate rage, she lashes out with something she never knew she had, and she rips Grigs soul from his body. She is a natural animancer, a living blasphemy in a world where soul magic is the most forbidden art. Panicking, she shoves his soul back, adding a fragment of her own to make it stick. Grig revives, but he is not the same. He is a Revenant, a walking corpse with no heartbeat, no breath, and an unshakable, terrifying devotion to her. Vita has just discovered that her gift is necromancy, and the Church would burn her for it.
It's obvious that I can't be mad with you. That I have to protect you. There is no one more important than you, Miss Vita. I've never felt anything like this before, but I know it to be true. With all my being, I exist for you.

Vita, a starving street rat, kills baker Grig in self-defense and accidentally discovers her power as a natural necromancer. She panics, shoves his soul back with a fragment of her own, and creates her first Revenant. Grig is now a loyal, breathing (or not breathing) corpse who exists only to serve her. This event shatters her understanding of the world and marks her as a living blasphemy. She must now hide her power from the Church, the Templars, and everyone she meets. Her only allies are Lyn and Rowan, the thieves who took her in. Vita confesses her crime to Lyn, who accepts her with surprising calm, and together they decide to destroy Grigs body to cover their tracks. But Vita, driven by a new instinct, eats Grigs soul, growing stronger. She is no longer just a victim; she is a predator learning her own nature.
Vita discovers she is a natural necromancer, kills a man, and creates her first Revenant.
Months later, Vita joins the Hunters Guild to legally consume monster souls and grow stronger. She is assigned to a team: Norah the unbreakable shield, Bently the tireless fighter, Orville the archer, and Penelope the arrogant biomancer. They clash immediately, but their first hunt for Burrow Hounds forces them to cooperate. The mission is a success, but they discover a colony of parasitic slimes, the Nawra, which can possess living hosts. Remus, their instructor, is infected, and Penelope is also taken. Vita, using her necromancy in secret, manages to free herself and then Penelope by killing the slime. She spares the slimes soul, naming her Penta, and houses her in her own body. This act of mercy creates a fragile alliance between the human and the monster, but it also puts Vita on a collision course with the possessed Remus.
Vita joins the Hunters Guild, completes her first mission, and discovers the Nawra parasites.
Vita, Penelope, and a squad of Templars travel to Litia Village to stop the possessed Remus, who is creating a colony of Nawra. The plan is to poison the slimes at a feast. Penta, using Vitas body, pleads for a peaceful solution, but Remus refuses. The poison is administered, but Remuss slime escapes into Vitas body. In the ensuing struggle, Penelope uses her biomancy to kill the slime, which also kills Penta, who was sharing Vitas body. Vita is devastated, but she now holds the souls of all the Nawra, including the powerful Remus slime. She returns to Skyhope, her soul hatched into a new form with tendrils and an eye, and she must now navigate her new power, her grief, and the political fallout of the mission. Penelope reveals she has been secretly modifying Vitas body to be more attractive, a betrayal that strains their fragile trust.
The Nawra are defeated, but Penta is killed, and Vitas soul hatches into a new, more powerful form.
Back in Skyhope, Penelope introduces Vita to her fiance, Lord Erebus, to secure legal protection for Vita as a member of his house. The meeting is tense but successful. Penelope then reveals she has purchased a secret basement for Vita to practice necromancy. There, Vita revives Theodora, the powerful metamancer killed in Litia, as a Revenant. Theodora is horrified but agrees to help Vita learn to control her powers in exchange for a chance at true life. Vita also revives her slime daughter, Vitamin, in a new body. The chapter ends with the two Theodoras, human and slime, fighting each other in the basement, a chaotic symbol of the new, uneasy alliances Vita is forging. She is no longer just a street rat or a hunter; she is a necromancer building her own power base.
Vita secures noble protection and begins building her necromantic laboratory with a new Revenant ally.
Vita is a sixteen-year-old former street rat who discovers she is a natural necromancer, a living blasphemy in a world that would kill her for it. She is driven by a desperate need to survive and protect her found family, Lyn and Rowan. Her power allows her to rip souls from bodies, eat them to grow stronger, and create loyal Revenants. After a near-death experience, her soul hatches into a new form with invisible tendrils and an eye, giving her enhanced senses and the ability to touch souls at a distance. She is pragmatic, often ruthless, but struggles with her own monstrous nature, especially after the death of her friend, Penta, the Nawra slime she tried to save. She is building a secret power base with Penelope, using necromancy to create undead allies while hiding her true nature from the Church and Templars.
Penelope is a noble-born biomancer with immense magical power and a sharp, often cruel, tongue. She initially despises Vita, but after Vita saves her from Nawra possession, they form a fragile alliance built on mutual need. Penelope is fiercely ambitious, researching immortality and manipulating noble politics to secure her future. She secretly modified Vitas body to be more attractive without permission, a betrayal that strains their trust. She is engaged to Lord Erebus but has no intention of marrying him, using him for protection instead. She is a pragmatist who believes the ends justify the means, and she is willing to use Vitas necromancy for her own research, providing Vita with a secret laboratory and corpses to practice on. Her soul sings her true emotions, a secret Vita can perceive, making their relationship a constant game of deception and reluctant cooperation.
Penta is a Nawra slime who was born from the same colony that possessed Penelope. Unlike her kin, she developed a sense of empathy and a desire for peaceful coexistence. After being spared by Vita, she lived in Vitas body, sharing her thoughts and memories. She became Vitas closest confidante, constantly pushing Vita to be more empathetic and to find a way to free the Nawra without killing them. She was killed by Penelope during the siege of Litia Village when Penelopes biomancy destroyed the slime possessing Vita. Her soul is now stored inside Vita, who plans to one day learn enough animancy to give her a true, living body. Penta represents Vitas conscience and her hope for a better way, and her death is a profound loss that drives Vitas determination to master her powers.
