The world of The Shining Wyrm is a place where the grand tapestry of high fantasy is woven from the most domestic of threads. Here, a dragon is not a terror of the wilds but a daughter, a sister, and a Lady of Rochford, a barony whose greatest battles are fought over history lessons and the proper etiquette of bathing. Jewel, the great shining wyrm of the title, is a creature of immense potential power, her scales like metal shields and her breath an all-consuming death, yet her first act in the story is to be scolded by her governess for nearly setting the study ablaze during a game of knights and dragons with her older brother, Alexander. This is the central, delightful contradiction of the novel: a world where the apocalyptic might of a dragon is subsumed into the rigid, loving structure of a noble family, where the greatest threat to a kingdom is not a monster but a scheduling conflict.
The cheat trigger, the engine that drives the entire narrative, is not a system, a reincarnation, or a hidden power. It is the simple, profound fact of Jewel's personhood. She is a wyrm, a being of legend, but she is also a child, and her family, the House of Rochford, has chosen to see her as such. This choice, to adopt a dragon as a daughter, is a radical act that reshapes the political and social landscape around her. It makes her a target for the covetous eyes of the King and his agents, a prize to be claimed, but it also makes her the center of a loving home. The story's magic is not in a spell or a sword but in this foundational premise: a monster is loved into becoming a person, and that person must now navigate a world that sees her as a weapon, a symbol, or a beast. The central conflict is not about learning to control her power, but about learning to be a lady, a sister, and a protector in a world that is about to go to war over her very existence.
Jewel! Not indoors!
The Shining Wyrm
A simple hunt for rabbits to celebrate Alexander's first bow becomes a trial by fire that shatters Jewel's innocence. Her brother, frustrated by a day of missed shots, foolishly looses an arrow at a monstrous boar, a beast of legend. In the ensuing chaos, Jewel is brutally mauled, her body crushed and her throat collapsed. She is saved only by the desperate intervention of a footman and the timely arrival of three wizards, who heal her with a brutal, muddy magic. The event is a brutal lesson in the limits of her own power and the fragility of those she loves, forcing her to confront the reality that she is not invincible and that her family's safety is her responsibility.
A foolish hunt shatters Jewel's innocence and reveals the terrifying limits of her own power.
The arrival of the wizards, particularly the smug cat Fizzbunches, throws the Rochford household into political chaos. They have come to study Jewel, the first wyrm to hatch in seven centuries, and their presence forces a reckoning. In a moment of desperation, Father pledges one of the wizards to service in exchange for healing Jewel. This leads to the boisterous Boar Festival, where Jewel learns to truly dance for the first time, discovering a magic of rhythm and joy that is entirely her own. The festival culminates in Father's choice of Tsulogothulan, the Bog Weird, as the family's sworn wizard, solidifying the supernatural protection around the house.
The wizards' arrival forces a political and magical alliance, while Jewel discovers the joy and power of dance.
A summons from their liege, Countess Bathory, forces Jewel and her family to travel to the city of Kaeketeh. The journey is a gauntlet of prejudice, where Jewel must constantly prove she is a person and not a beast. In Kaeketeh, she discovers the true stakes of her existence: the Countess is preparing for war against the King, who wants to claim Jewel for himself. Jewel is forced to demonstrate her destructive power, burning a mock army to ash, and is horrified to hear the other lords discussing her as a piece of property to be inherited. The Countess quashes this talk, but the threat of war and the reality of being seen as a weapon now hang over Jewel's every moment.
Jewel's journey to court reveals she is a pawn in a brewing war, a weapon to be coveted and controlled.
Winter passes with intense training, and spring brings the full muster of the army. The manor is transformed into a military camp, and the familiar fields of Rochford are filled with thousands of soldiers. Jewel takes to the skies as a scout, learning the slow, grinding reality of a military campaign. The arrival of Fizzbunches and a coalition of wizards, including the famed Urul the Written, solidifies the army's magical might. The story closes with the army marching north to war, leaving behind the home Jewel has always known, her childhood officially over as she flies into a conflict that will decide the fate of her family and her very right to exist as a person.
The army marches to war, and Jewel leaves her childhood home behind to fight for her family's future.
Jewel is a young wyrm, a dragon of immense potential power, who has been raised as a beloved daughter and a proper lady. She is bright, kind, and deeply devoted to her family, especially her brother Alexander. Her journey is one of self-discovery, as she learns to navigate a world that sees her as both a monster and a miracle. She is a quick study in history, stewardship, and etiquette, but she is also a force of nature, capable of devastating destruction. Her core conflict is between her gentle, ladylike nature and the violent, world-changing power she wields, a conflict that comes to a head as she is forced into a war she never wanted.
Jonathan is a loving father and a capable lord, but he is also a man haunted by the fear of losing his family. He is a Gryphon Lord, a powerful warrior, but his primary role is as a protector. He chose to adopt Jewel as his daughter, a decision that has brought him immense joy and immense political peril. He is a shrewd steward of his lands and a skilled diplomat, but his love for his family is his greatest strength and his most profound vulnerability. He carries the weight of the coming war on his shoulders, and his primary goal is to keep his children safe, even as he leads them into battle.
Tsulogothulan is a bog wizard of immense power and unsettling appearance, with a single, huge eye and a body that moves in a boneless, fluid manner. They are a loyal and patient teacher to Jewel, guiding her in the nature of sorcery and the art of dance. They are deeply connected to the natural world, particularly water and mud, and their magic is a slow, patient, and pervasive force. They are a friend and confidant to Jewel, offering wisdom and support while also being a source of profound strangeness. Their presence is a constant reminder that the world is far larger and more mysterious than the simple politics of the realm.
