Reina Tanaka does not storm out of a boardroom. She storms out of a shrine, clutching her dead grandfather's ashes and a sword she never expected to draw. Her father just threatened to destroy that shrine to force her into a corporate role, so she grabbed everything sacred and walked. Minutes later, one of his augmented goons grabs her, and her body moves before her brain catches up — the old katana severs a mechanical arm, then rests against her father's throat. She surprises herself more than she surprises him. The blade responds. The world, pressed into a coldly beautiful mega-city built on holograms and corporate rot, has already labeled her disposable. The rift in the sky tears open an hour later, spewing plant-dog monsters, and Reina realizes her father sabotaged her car to trap her in the building. Then she kills a Model Three with that same ancestral blade, and a voice blooms in her skull: System Initialized. Congratulations. You are now a Vanguard. The AI named Artymis does not give her a choice. The shelter across the street is compromised, people are dying, and the only way to save them is to spend points on a combat catalog called "Blades in the Dark." She accepts. Her first dose of awareness serum makes her feel the blood in her veins as individual rivulets. The next three minutes become a blur of severed limbs and purple energy as she carves a path through the street.
With a single movement I drew my grandfather's katana, severed the mechanical limb, then swept around, coming to a stop a few inches from my father's throat.

Reina sits cross-legged on a filthy tile floor, a synaptic implant throbbing behind her ears. The headache nearly buckles her vision. When she finally stands, the world has changed — she can perceive individual frames of her own movement. She slices through a pack of Model Threes like they're standing still. The killing feels inevitable. But the real shock comes when she reaches the basement shelter to find her own father's corporate logo on the security system: he disabled the shelter's defenses to store his stolen goods. She bypasses his locks with hacker-tech purchased from Artymis, and the civilian survivors cheer. One guard with a claw scar on his neck shakes her hand with bone-crushing force. She tells him to burn anything suspicious inside. The shelter door slams shut, sealing safety behind her, and she realizes her father has been actively sabotaging anti-antithesis infrastructure for profit.
Reina awakens as a samurai in a janitor closet, then discovers her father compromised a public shelter for personal gain.
A Model Five squad pins her inside a synth-leather boutique with poison spines that punch through body armor. She has no ranged option, hates guns, and the door is buckling. Artymis drops a compound bow and monowire arrows into her hands. The first arrow turns a Five into paste — the expanding wire strands slice every direction, reducing the creature to a fine red spray. She buys multispectral glasses next, learns to see through walls, and shoots the remaining Fives through drywall without exposing herself. When she steps outside, a nanite golem two stories tall is stomping antithesis into pulp in the street. It melts into a woman in a tight metal suit: Grey Goo, an experienced samurai. Grey offers Reina a ride to the command center, a juice box, and the first hint that this incursion is worse than normal. Reina is carrying her grandfather's ashes in a backpack. She hands them to a PMC sergeant for safekeeping.
Reina acquires a bow and wall-hacking glasses to survive Model Fives, then meets veteran samurai Grey Goo.
A Model Seventeen command unit hunts them. It sets an ambush outside the Tanaka Industries sales office — a Model Fourteen bursts through a wall while hundreds of lesser antithesis flood the street. Reina's squad is cut off from the APC. Bulldog finds a maintenance door, but the lock is chained. She slices through both chain and door with her new monomolecular blade, and the APC skids around the corner, ramp already down. The Fourteen chases them across a parking lot, but the truck is faster. Reina collapses onto a bench, gasping. The Seventeen, she learns, uses neural strands to control two dozen other models directly and can coordinate entire swarms through those puppets. It is not a brute. It is a planner. Skyler, her lawyer girlfriend, was nearly killed by it earlier. The thing is now hunting them specifically.
A Model Seventeen orchestrates a multi-pronged ambush, forcing a desperate escape that reveals its strategic intellect.
The pet shop's seed pod punched through the shelter roof. Sevens — zombie worms — have infested every person inside. The civilians are dead, their bodies puppeted by the parasites. Reina sees them shambling toward her through the camera feed, glassy-eyed, reaching for her. She floods the pod with enzyme catalyst, dissolving the biomass and the worms inside. Two survivors remain — the parasites haven't fully taken them yet. Skyler injects healing nanites into the base of one boy's skull. He will live, but the other must be put down. Bulldog carries the woman's body to a pile while Reina turns away. She cannot save everyone. But she finds one small tawny kitten, backed into a gap on a bookshelf, hissing with tiny paws. She names it Lala and carries it in a cat carrier backpack the rest of the incursion.
Reina finds a pet shop shelter reduced to a charnel house by Sevens, rescues one boy and one kitten, and learns the cost of failure.
Reina inherits her steel from a grandfather who taught her martial arts and her sharp tongue from a life spent dodging her father's machinations. She awakens by killing a Three with a katana, chooses a melee-focused catalog out of pure stubbornness, and spends the next twelve hours proving she belongs on the front line. She carries her grandfather's ashes for half the incursion, refuses to leave a single civilian behind, and argues with her own AI about ethical purchase disclosures. Her girlfriend becoming a samurai too is the one piece of luck she never expected.
Skyler awakens in a collapsing courthouse, becomes a samurai before she can process the event, and immediately starts commanding a mortar-bot named Howie. She is Reina's legal counsel, her lover, and the one who talks her down from murdering her father in the parking lot. She buys hacking catalogs to open compromised doors, upgrades her drones into flying machine-gun platforms, and never stops trying to make both of them better. She names the artillery bot Howitzer. She is not subtle. She is effective.
Grey Goo appears as a two-story nanite monster stomping aliens, then melts into a statuesque woman in tight metal who hands Reina a juice box and tells her the incursion is not average. She assigns temporary names — Honorable Wind, Cleansing Rain — with the casual authority of someone who has done this many times. She goes deeper into the combat zone while Reina works the periphery, and later eats chicken with her feet on the table in a command conference room. She is the first face of the samurai hierarchy Reina meets, and she sets the tone: help is given freely, but the fight is always yours.
