In a world broken by a reality-invading Spell that infects teenagers with nightmarish trials, seventeen-year-old Sunless is born with the worst possible fate: he's a penniless outcast whose First Nightmare begins with him as a dying slave. No combat training. No family legacy. No inherited memories. Just an Aspect called [Temple Slave] — literally the Spell's most useless classification. But this cosmic middle finger hides a terrifying loophole. When Sunny spills his blood on the altar of a dead god, the Shadow God stirs, granting him a Divine-class Aspect that's never existed before — [Shadow Slave]. His cheat? He can now control shadows as an extension of his will. His curse? He cannot lie. And his True Name — "Lost from Light" — is a double-edged sword that can make him a puppet to anyone who learns it. Welcome to a LitRPG where the "protagonist privilege" is a poisoned chalice, and every victory is bought with blood.
There are those who are blessed, and there are those who are cursed… but rarely both.
Sunny awakens in a mountain slave caravan, chained and half-frozen. His Aspect is "useless." His only attribute: [Fated] — which attracts improbable events. When a Dormant Tyrant (Mountain King) descends and begins spawning larvae from dead slaves, Sunny doesn't fight — he engineers. Using a broken wagon as leverage, he tricks the blind tyrant into falling off a cliff. But the real prize? Killing Auro of the Nine, an Awakened swordsman, with a silver bell's ring that attracts the tyrant. The Spell rewards him with a Divine Aspect and the first true betrayal: his Flaw is Clear Conscience — he can never lie again. The system had just created its most broken weapon… and its most vulnerable one.
Outcast slave kills tyrant, earns Shadow God's blessing.
Sunny enters the Dream Realm — a ruined magical world where a dark sea floods everything at night, forcing survivors to climb high ground before sunset. He manifests his shadow as a scout, instantly becoming the perfect spy. When he meets Nephis (the "Changing Star," last heir of the Immortal Flame clan) and Cassie (a blind oracle), their trio faces impossible odds: Awakened scavengers with armored carapaces. But Sunny's shadow can enhance weapons — turning a bone shard into a spear that pierces a scavenger's eye. He earns his first Echo, a Carapace Scavenger, and learns that survival here isn't about power — it's about teamwork and exploiting enemy weaknesses. But the real horror lurks in the static silence of the Ashen Barrow.
Sunny masters shadow control, earns first Echo, teams with Nephis & Cassie.
The trio reaches an island crowned by a giant tree. Its fruit grants power — Sunny gains Shadow Fragments without fighting. But something's wrong: the tree's mesmerizing effect erases their memories, turning them into willing servants. Sunny, protected by the Puppeteer's Shroud (a mind-resistance armor), is the only one who notices Cassie's cryptic warning: "Five!" — the number of his hidden Attribute [Enthralled]. The tree is a Nightmare Creature slowly consuming their souls. Sunny breaks his own finger to stay lucid, builds a boat from a demon's corpse, and drags his mesmerized companions into the cursed dark sea — burning the island behind them. The tree's dying fire unleashes abyssal terrors that might just destroy the ancient fiend.
Sunny resists mind control, burns the island, flees on a bone-ship.
The bone-ship is destroyed by a deep-sea leviathan. Nephis is torn apart — her body shattered, one eye gone, an arm barely attached. But Nephis is the last heir of Immortal Flame. She triggers her Aspect's true power: white fire that burns away death itself. She regenerates from near-fatal wounds, her body rebuilt by sacred flames. Meanwhile, Sunny dives into the abyss to save Cassie, battling tentacles in the freezing dark, and surfaces just as the first dawn breaks. They find themselves at the base of a colossal stone hand — and beyond it, the human castle they've been seeking. But the castle holds a final twist: Sunny's shadow senses the Crimson Spire's presence — a structure of seven severed heads guarding seven seals. The real nightmare is just beginning.
Nephis resurrects via sacred fire, they reach the human castle, but the Crimson Spire looms.
Pathological liar turned truth-bound tactician; survived impossible First Nightmare; his shadow is his ultimate weapon and his True Name is his greatest vulnerability.
Can heal herself and others with sacred fire; survived a Terror in her First Nightmare; her Flaw is excruciating pain when using her Aspect. Carries the burden of three mysterious names: Aster, Song, Vale.
Flaw made her blind; she can see others' Attributes and glimpses future/past. Her cryptic "Five!" warning saved the trio from the Soul Devourer. Carries a tier-6 Awakened armor gifted by Nephis — her survivability is an ironic twist.
Possesses an Ascended Aspect that grants superhuman speed; fought Nephis to a draw; deeply suspicious of Sunny's "weakness" act. His lineage and connections make him a future wildcard in the Dream Realm.
