Two moons bathe the cliffs of Starberry Peak in silver light. Inside a rustic wooden house, two bronze-rank crafters, Crow and Dove, wait anxiously for a courier named Walker. He arrives carrying a stasis cylinder containing a human infant and a chest of legendary resources. The chest holds a Void essence, a Barrier essence, and awakening stones of Karma and Mana. A letter from the birth parents explains they were forced to diverge on their paths, sending the void to hide him and the wall to protect him, severing their karma so he could live free. This exact delivery sets Kite on a highly specific trajectory. Instead of a straightforward damage-dealing build, his kit forces him into the role of an anti-mage. He absorbs the essences at seventeen, enduring a brutal physical purification that expels every impurity from his body. He awakens Heaven-and-Void Warding to block attacks, Spirit Singularity to drain enemy mana, and Pattern-Shattering Counter to dispel incoming spells. The world operates on a strict hierarchy where sects hoard resources and outcasts scrape by in the mana-sparse Autumn Lands. Kite's birth parents gave him the tools to bypass sect restrictions, but his aunties deliberately hid the chest to ensure he grew up grounded, valuing human connection over guaranteed supremacy. Now fully awakened, Kite must test his counter-heavy kit against real monsters, stepping out of his village and into the dangerous valleys with Uncle Walker to forge his foundation.
We send you the void to hide you and the wall to protect you against the world. The shards of a lost love and the magic of a life born of it. And lastly the severance of karma between us.
Rising Kite - A story from the world of HWFWM
Kite steps into the wilderness with Uncle Walker to test his newly awakened abilities against actual monsters. His first real test comes against a Gyrmling, a creature that uses magic to reinforce bark armor. Kite draws his halberd from his void sheath and uses Disrupting Strike to shatter the magical reinforcement, turning the armor into ordinary wood that his weapon easily cleaves. He quickly realizes his kit lacks raw, explosive damage; his victory relies entirely on stripping away the enemy's magical advantages and draining their stamina. This limitation forces him to adopt a flexible, reactive fighting style. He practices relentlessly, learning to time his Pattern-Shattering Counter to intercept attacks a fraction of a second before they land, effectively nullifying the magical components of his opponents' strikes. His training culminates in a brutal sparring session where Auntie Crow uses her animated hair to batter him, teaching him that his barriers must be integrated into his footwork and weapon swings rather than used as static shields. He learns to angle his defenses to deflect momentum, a lesson that saves his life when he faces a Moss Prowler that relies on pure physical speed rather than magic. Kite survives by using Spiritual Reprisal to stack damage on the beast every time it strikes his ward. Having mastered the basics of his anti-mage kit in the wild, Kite returns to the village only to find his path intersecting with the broader, more dangerous political landscape of the Autumn Lands, where sect initiates patrol the roads and demand absolute deference.
Kite masters his reactive, dispelling combat style in the wild, preparing him for the political dangers of the sect-controlled Autumn Lands.
The political reality of the Autumn Lands crashes into Kite's life at a waterfall where an awakening stone manifests. Young Master Providence, an initiate of the Victorious Sunset Sect, demands the treasure, citing his sect's territorial rights. Uncle Walker casually dismantles the boy's argument by citing a seven-hundred-year-old decree from the Queen of Jade and Sky, which guarantees that natural manifestations belong to whoever finds them first. Enraged, Providence challenges Kite to a formal Clash of Paths. Providence channels his light essence into a massive, ten-meter pillar of searing energy called Sky-cleaving Heavenly Divide. Instead of dodging, Kite walks straight into the blinding light and activates Pattern-Shattering Counter. The mirror-shattering pulse completely disperses the light pillar, draining Providence's mana and leaving the initiate wide open. Kite closes the distance and punches him in the face, ending the duel in seconds. This humiliating defeat brands Kite as a target for the Victorious Sunset Sect. Providence's pride is shattered, and his sect elders view Kite's victory as an insult to their hierarchy. The sect's rigid, nepotistic culture cannot tolerate an outcast besting their chosen, setting up a looming conflict. Kite realizes that raw power is not enough in a world where institutional backing can crush you; he must become strong enough that no sect can ignore his path, pushing him to seek out the ultimate proving ground left by the Queen herself.
Kite humiliates a sect initiate by dispelling his ultimate attack, branding himself as a target for the arrogant Victorious Sunset Sect.
Kite forms a trio with Dragonfly, a battle-hungry axe-wielder, and Serene, a priestess of Song whose support magic is shunned by the local sect-obsessed culture. Their first major test is a contract in Verdant Steps, a village haunted by mourning revenants. The spirits hunt using aura senses and inflict necrosis. Serene's deep aura perception allows them to track the source to an abandoned mine, where they discover a bone effigy harboring a bronze-rank Tenebral Wraith. The wraith conjures bone armor and fires corrosive spiritual acid. Kite's barriers are pushed to the limit, shattering under the bronze-rank pressure. He survives by using his Unyielding ability to root himself against the wraith's physical blows and his Void-Sunders-Firmament to tear through the conjured bone armor. Serene's songs heal their wounds and boost their damage, while Dragonfly ramps up her inner flame by taking hits, eventually decapitating the wraith with a fiery axe finisher. During the aftermath, Serene reveals her tragic past: she was a victim of the Unbreakable Chains Sect, a fallen organization whose deviant members tortured her and literally stole her voice. Her goal is not vengeance, but to become strong enough to face them and sing her own song. This revelation cements the trio's bond and gives Kite a personal stake in the coming war against the sect's remnants. Having proven they can defeat bronze-rank threats through flawless teamwork, the trio returns to Gilded, where Kite decides he must enter the Jade-Sky Gate to forge his soul before the sect's deviants can strike again.
The trio defeats a bronze-rank wraith, uncovering the dark rituals of the fallen sect and solidifying their bond for the coming war.
Kite enters the Jade-Sky Gate, immediately ambushed by Rise of Morning Glory and four sect initiates who want to steal his token. Kite uses his Void Gate to absorb their barrage and hitches a ride on the ascending portal ring, escaping into the sky and arriving in a proto-astral space. The trial is overseen by Third, an enthusiastic orb construct who guides Kite through six elemental domains. Kite faces stone soldiers that slow his movement, a fire warlord that burns his wooden armor to ash, and a gelatinous water ruler that ambushes him in the dark. He adapts by using his familiar, Glint the celestial carp, to control the water domain's environment, and his astral gatherer, Sage, to unleash stored mana as devastating resonating force beams. The emotional climax occurs in the final forging. Third sacrifices its own existence to be hammered by the gate's magic, forging the Immutable Echo, a legendary staff bound to Kite's soul. As his soul is battered by the forging process, Kite's internal mantra shifts from rigid stubbornness to adaptable resilience, realizing his path is strengthened by the bonds he forges. He emerges from the gate wielding the new staff, his aura hardened by the trial. He is immediately confronted by a Grand Elder of the Victorious Sunset Sect who demands his spoils. Refusing to submit, Kite uses the departing gate to escape, riding the artifact through a portal into the sky, straight toward a floating jade palace where a diamond-rank aura knocks him unconscious.
Kite survives the gate's elemental trials, forges a legendary staff from the construct's soul, and escapes a sect ambush into the sky.
Raised by two crafters in a remote village, Kite was gifted legendary essences by his absent birth parents to ensure his freedom. His combat style relies on dispelling enemy magic, draining mana, and countering attacks rather than dealing raw damage. He evolves from a naive boy into a tactical pathbreaker who values human connection above all, eventually forging a legendary staff from the soul of a trial construct.
Serene possesses a fourfold aura that boosts allies and debuffs enemies, making her a highly sought-after but culturally shunned support adventurer. She is a survivor of the Unbreakable Chains Sect's path of pain, having literally lost her voice to their torturers. She joins Kite not for revenge, but to reclaim her agency and prove her song belongs to her, using her deep aura perception to guide the trio through deadly encounters.
Orphaned during a monster surge that killed her parents and sister, Dragonfly channels her trauma into a relentless fighting style that grows stronger the more damage she takes. She forms a deep romantic and martial bond with Kite, practicing intimate aura techniques to refine their control. Her aggressive, close-quarters combat perfectly complements Kite's defensive and dispelling abilities, making them a devastating duo on the battlefield.
