In the ashen depths of Vulture Woods, where the trees bleed crimson and the wolves hunt in packs that would make even a dire bear think twice, a goblin child was born who did not fit the mold. Stryg came into the world with cyan skin instead of forest green, lilac eyes instead of yellow, and a frailty that marked him as odd before he could even open his eyes. The Blood Fang tribe, a sylvan goblin tribe that measured worth in strength and cruelty, saw him as a bad omen sent by Lunae herself. The Mothers raised him collectively, teaching him to skin rabbits and rival goblins alike, but they never shielded him from the truth: he was the runt, the freak, the one who would never be strong. Stryg trained harder than any other youth in the tribe, waking before dawn and sleeping after dusk, yet his body betrayed him at every turn. He could not pull a bowstring, could not outrun a gatherer, could not win a single sparring match. His only solace came from the eccentric hunter Sigte, who taught him the strange technique of words, reading and writing, a skill that the other goblins mocked as useless.
On the night of his eighteenth birthday, Stryg faced his first night challenge, a hand-to-hand battle meant to prove his worth as an adult goblin. He chose Gathi, a gatherer he believed he could defeat, but the crowd's interference and his own faltering will led to a brutal beating. He cried, he gave up, and in doing so, he sealed his fate as an exile in the making. The shaman Crovor intervened with a lie about a vision from Lunae, claiming Stryg was chosen for a sacred quest to redeem himself. Stryg clung to that lie like a lifeline, believing that the mother moon had finally blessed him. He followed Crovor and a dozen tribemates into the heart of Vulture Woods, toward a cave that supposedly held a treasure that would elevate the Blood Fang tribe above all others. But the cave held no treasure, only a lamia that slaughtered his tribemates one by one. In the darkness, Stryg discovered he could see perfectly, a gift he attributed to Lunae's blessing. He killed the lamia with a spear through her throat, but when Crovor confessed that the entire quest was a fabrication, that Stryg was never chosen by any goddess, the goblin's world shattered. He ran, leaving his tribemates to die, and was captured by a poacher who planned to sell him as a slave in Hollow Shade.
The strongest get what they want, so be the strongest.
Realm of Monsters
Stryg arrives in Hollow Shade as a captive, bound by ivlid weed ropes that no orc could break. He watches the towering black magestone walls, the crowds of drow, orcs, and vampires, and the centaurs pulling carriages, a world so foreign that his sylvan goblin mind cannot comprehend its scale. When the poacher stops to pay the entrance fee, Stryg's desperation ignites a surge of heat through his arms, and the ropes fray and snap. He vanishes into the crowd, running through streets he does not know, chased by three young humans who mock him for his appearance. The sentinels, undead guardians of the night, attack the humans, and Stryg escapes across rooftops, his perfect night vision guiding him through the darkness. He is alone, hungry, and terrified, but he has discovered something extraordinary: he can break ropes with his bare hands, he can see in pitch black, and he is not the weak goblin he believed himself to be. This is the moment the old Stryg dies and the mageborn begins to awaken.
Stryg discovers his mageborn nature and hybrid abilities, escaping slavery and entering Hollow Shade as a fugitive.
Stryg encounters Karen, a goblin pickpocket who offers him food in exchange for conversation. She is the first person in the city to show him kindness, buying him chicken dumplings and listening to his stories of the sylvan tribes. He begins to trust her, a fatal mistake in the world of goblins where trust is weakness. Karen leads him to the trade district, but she has been sent by Jax, the leader of the Wild Knives gang, whose nose Stryg broke earlier that day. Eight goblins surround Stryg, and Karen watches as they beat him, her cries of protest drowned by the violence. Stryg fights back with feral desperation, biting off Jax's nose, slashing throats, and killing three thugs before the guards arrive. He is captured, and a docility collar is placed around his neck, but the enchantment fails. The brown mage Mr. Granby reveals that Stryg is a mageborn, a being of immense value to the city. Instead of slavery, Stryg is offered a place at the magic academy, a chance to learn magic and serve Hollow Shade for ten years. He accepts, and for the first time in his life, he has a path forward, a way to become strong.
Stryg is betrayed by Karen, fights the Wild Knives gang, and is discovered to be a mageborn, earning a place at the magic academy.
Stryg enters the magic academy as a first-year student, but his first day is a disaster. He is late to class, smells of alcohol, and cannot tie his shoes. He is assigned to a group project with Callum Veres, a half-vampire scion of a great house, and Kithina, a dwarf commoner who despises him on sight. Professor Tauri's physical conditioning class reveals Stryg's hybrid nature when he outruns every student, including the pure vampire Clypeus Gale. Tauri explains that Stryg is a hybrid, likely half-drow, and that his hybrid traits are only now manifesting. The revelation shatters Stryg's identity. He always believed he was a goblin, a freakish goblin, but still a goblin. Now he learns he is something else entirely, something that can never return to the Blood Fang tribe. In the duels class, Professor Loh Noir forces Stryg to fight the orc Kegrog, and in his desperation, Stryg casts a grey drain spell, weakening Kegrog and nearly killing him. Loh is impressed and takes Stryg as her personal apprentice, a decision that will shape the rest of his year. Stryg begins to learn magic, to harness his anger as a focus, and to understand that his hybrid nature is not a curse but a source of unique power.
Stryg learns he is a hybrid, becomes Loh Noir's apprentice, and begins to master his grey and black magic while navigating academy politics.
Stryg tracks Karen to her family home, intending to force her to reveal the location of the Wild Knives gang. But he witnesses her mother and little sister Sophi, and he cannot bring himself to harm them. Instead, he saves them from malfunctioning sentinels, a decision that softens his hatred. When Karen finally finds him, she confesses that Jax has taken her family hostage. Stryg storms the gang's hideout, killing several thugs, but he is shot twice by Jax's crossbow. In the final confrontation, Karen stabs Jax in the back, and Stryg uses a drain spell to heal himself. He kills Jax by tearing out his throat with his teeth. Sophi is severely injured, but a white mage saves her life. Karen is disowned by her mother, and Stryg arranges for her to become an acolyte at a local temple. In the aftermath, Stryg reflects on his journey. He has killed, he has saved, he has lost, and he has gained. He decides to found his own tribe, the Ebon Hollow, a tribe that will be his new family, his new home. The name is a tribute to Hollow Shade, the city that made him a mage, and to the ebon darkness that he now sees as beautiful rather than frightening.
Stryg destroys the Wild Knives gang, saves Karen's family, and founds the Ebon Hollow tribe, embracing his new identity as a leader.
Stryg is a hybrid goblin-drow mageborn from the sylvan Blood Fang tribe, exiled after a failed night challenge and a disastrous quest that killed his tribemates. He escapes slavery in Hollow Shade and discovers he is a manifold mage with black, grey, and orange chromatic colors. He becomes the apprentice of Loh Noir, a high master mage, and learns to channel his anger into spellcasting. Stryg's hybrid nature grants him enhanced speed, strength, senses, and perfect night vision, but also makes him a target of prejudice. He kills without hesitation, trusts almost no one, and views the world through the lens of survival of the fittest. Over the course of the year, he slowly forms bonds with Callum Veres, Kithina, and Plum, and enters a loveless engagement with the barmaid Feli. He destroys the Wild Knives gang, saves Karen's family, and founds the Ebon Hollow tribe, embracing his role as a leader. His ultimate goal is to become powerful enough to never be hurt again, but his growing attachments threaten to undermine his cold philosophy.
Feli is a human barmaid at the Merry Crescent tavern in the commoner district, known for her beauty and charm. She enters a loveless engagement with Stryg, offering her body in exchange for his future wealth and status as a mage. She is driven by a desperate desire to escape the commoner life, having watched her sister die in poverty and addiction. Over time, she develops genuine affection for Stryg, though she refuses to call it love. She supports him through his injuries, cooks for him, and helps him tie his shoes, small acts of care that he does not know how to reciprocate. She is pragmatic about their arrangement, but her growing attachment complicates her cold calculus. She represents the possibility of a softer life, a home, and a tribe of two, but she also embodies the vulnerability that Stryg fears most.
Loh Noir is a drow high master manifold mage, scion of the great house Noir, and professor of duels at the magic academy. She is known for her incredible spellcasting, her infamous temper, and her controversial reputation among the high-class. She takes Stryg as her personal apprentice after witnessing his raw talent and anger-driven magic. She is harsh, demanding, and often cruel, but she genuinely cares for Stryg's growth, seeing in him echoes of her own past failures. She has a strained relationship with her family, particularly her grandfather Elzri, and carries the guilt of a lost love, Aizel, whom she failed to protect. Her secret love is Tauri Katag, an orc professor who does not reciprocate her feelings. Loh teaches Stryg to consolidate his anger, to trust his instincts, and to understand that power is not the only thing that matters. She is the first person to truly believe in him, and she vows never to abandon him.
