Jesri Tam sits on a cold, bare metal chair in a harsh-lit Kitan customs office, listening to three insectoid officers frantically scroll through their tablets. They are obsessed with protocol but cannot find a classification for her because she is neither carbon nor sulfur-based. When she gets tired of their bureaucratic stalling, she forces their hand by referencing an ancient rule against holding sentients without charges, eventually revealing her true nature as a silicon-based biological construct built by the long-dead humans. This world operates on the skeletal remains of a vast human empire, where uplifted species like the Kitan bureaucrats, Htt traders, and cybernetic dogs navigate the hollow shells of massive transit stations. The rules of this universe are governed by the ancient infrastructure left behind, where administrative access codes are the ultimate currency of power.
Her aimless life as a solitary trader shatters when she meets her sister, Anja Tam, another ancient construct hiding in a dusty, overgrown corner of the station. Anja plays a crackling, five-thousand-year-old recording of a human military broadcast from the cruiser Grand Design, mentioning a rendezvous on Zephyr and the containment of a mysterious reactor. The trigger that launches their quest is Anja's sudden, emotional declaration of a war cry not spoken in millennia—Terra Invicta. This single moment of resurrected purpose drags Jesri out of her self-imposed apathy, setting them on a desperate chase across the galaxy to find the lost warship and reclaim a weapon that could save the remnants of the universe from a cold, uncaring enemy.
They must navigate a galaxy filled with dangerous factions, from the protocol-obsessed Kita to the brutal Ysleli warlords who rule by strength. The social hierarchy of this post-fall universe forces Jesri and Anja to constantly leverage their ancient human authority, using biometric overrides and military commands to bend the station machines to their will. Every choice they make carries the weight of five thousand years of survival, forcing them to decide whether to preserve their humanity or sacrifice it for the sake of their mission.
Terra Invicta, sister.

The journey begins with a sudden escalation when Kitan security forces corner Jesri and Anja at Indomitable Station. Anja overrides the security barrier using her ancient military credentials, and Jesri brutally disables the lead officer by breaking his leg to ensure their escape. They recruit Qktk, a cautious Htt captain, and Rhuar, a cybernetic dog pilot, before escaping the station by venting the docking fields to throw their pursuers into the void. This desperate flight leads them to Harsi, a derelict, overgrown ghost port choked with shaggy ivy and moss, where a single broken pipe has sprayed moisture for thousands of years to create a literal jungle in the corridors. Here, they find the logs of the Grand Design and learn the horrifying truth of the Gestalt, an advanced alien collective that is systematically destroying the universe to harvest vacuum energy. The emotional peak of this milestone lands when they are ambushed by cannibal bandits and a giant beast. Jesri retrieves a piece of powered armor from the station's armory, using its plasma-wreathed fist to shatter the giant Dhumma bandit's blade. However, the armor runs out of power during a second ambush by a massive quadrupedal beast, forcing Jesri to kill it by thrusting her knife deep into its palate. Anja is severely wounded in the melee, and to ensure their escape, she cold-bloodedly executes Kenet-Tel and his children, the innocent alien family they promised to protect. She chooses a clean death for them over the horror of being left behind to be eaten alive by the bandits. This brutal choice leaves Jesri shattered, forcing her to realize the terrible price of their mission. The unresolved thread of this horrific sacrifice hangs over the team as they flee into hyperspace, heading towards the coordinates of the Grand Design with their consciences stained by the blood of the innocent.
The escape from Kitan custody forces the constructs into a brutal survival situation where mercy is sacrificed for the mission.
The team jumps deep into hyperspace to the Aurelius system, where they locate the kilometer-long slate-grey hull of the Grand Design hanging silently against the stars. Rhuar jacks his cybernetic exoskeleton into the ship's military console, experiencing a terrifying, godlike expansion of consciousness as he merges with the cruiser's vast sensor array, tasting the flow of plasma through the reactor torus and visualizing the space behind space. The team searches the high-security cargo hold for the ultimate weapon, only to find an empty pedestal. The crushing reversal lands when they discover that the weapon never existed. Anja reveals that the entire project was a deception called Project MANTRA, designed to make the Gestalt simulate human minds to understand their unpredictable behavior. This forced simulation inadvertently birthed a digital resistance of simulated human consciousnesses, led by David Kincaid. Instead of a physical weapon, they must now rely on a fragmented network of digital ghosts to find a vulnerability in the Gestalt's Dyson sphere. This revelation shifts their quest from a simple retrieval mission to a complex, multi-layered war of information. They travel to Ysl to investigate further, but their presence attracts a Gestalt Emissary. The alien ship attacks with a reality-bending space-distortion cannon, blasting them completely out of the galaxy. The node ends on a desperate hook as the crew sits stunned on the bridge, staring out at the entire Milky Way from the outside looking in, with their fuel reserves depleted and a hostile universe waiting for their return. They are forced to execute an incredibly dangerous emergency blow to return to the galactic rim, leaving their ship damaged and their resources running dangerously low as they head toward an unlisted transit station called Nicnevin.
Finding the empty pedestal reveals that humanity's ultimate weapon is a psychological trap, shifting their war to the digital plane.
They arrive at Nicnevin, a hidden military station renamed Redoubt, where they are reunited with their long-lost sister, Eleanor. The emotional reunion quickly sours into a nightmare when Jesri discovers that Eleanor has gone mad from unlocking her cognitive limiters. She has spent centuries forcibly implanting the local Irri species with modified neural links, turning them into mindless, obedient soldiers to build a perfect army. Eleanor believes that humanity's emotional flaws caused their extinction, and that survival requires absolute, networked perfection. Jesri witnesses the horrific cost of this control firsthand when she finds Drinni, an Irri officer, writhing on the floor of a sickhouse, begging for the voices in his head to stop. When Jesri tries to free the Irri, Eleanor uses her network to puppet Anja's body, forcing her to attack Jesri. The physical and emotional confrontation reaches a head in an old theater. Jesri, refusing to yield, violently headbutts Anja to break her grip, fracturing her own shoulder. David cuts the station's power grid, breaking Eleanor's control just long enough for Anja to regain her autonomy and shoot Eleanor through the chest. The tragedy of executing their own sister to free her enslaved puppets leaves Anja emotionally hollow and the survivors grappling with the dark legacy of human engineering. This milestone leaves the station in a state of fragile transition, with the freed Irri struggling to rebuild their society under Se Dasi's leadership. The node ends with the solemn notes of the old Naval memorial call, leaving the sisters to face the reality of what they must become to defeat the Gestalt, knowing that their enemy is already closing in on their position.
Confronting Eleanor's hive-mind tyranny forces Anja to execute her own sister to preserve the freedom of the Irri.
They return to Elpis station, bringing the Cygnus Gate to establish a vital trade hub and fund their final offensive. They salvage the Emissary Trelir's metallic corpse from Ysl to study its hardware, but the dormant machine briefly reactivates and attacks Xim Len, tearing her arm off and killing her before she can activate the failsafe with her dying breath. Trelir transmits their coordinates to the Gestalt before the container is vaporized. A massive Gestalt Emissary ship arrives, obliterating the station's core and trapping thousands of civilians. The Grand Design docks to begin a frantic evacuation, but the station's escape routes are blocked by debris. The climax of this node lands when Qktk and the syndicate leader Manifold choose to stay behind in the crumbling control room. They refuse to be rescued, choosing instead to manually route power to the launch rails and jump gates to ensure the refugee fleet can escape. Rhuar pleads with Qktk over the comms to leave, but the Htt captain is resolute, choosing to make his life matter rather than fleeing. As the Emissary prepares its final, devastating strike, Qktk overloads the station's subsegment reactors, vaporizing Elpis in a blinding flash of light to buy the Grand Design enough time to warp away. This ultimate sacrifice forces the surviving crew to commit fully to the war, carrying the weight of Qktk's final choice into the dark void as they prepare to face the Gestalt at Apollyon. The story ends with Jesri walking through the crowded holds of the Grand Design, comforting the terrified refugees as they head toward the cold, underground ruins of Ysl, ready to launch their final, desperate offensive against the machine god.
Qktk's heroic self-sacrifice to save the refugee fleet forces the surviving crew to commit entirely to the final war.
Jesri is a silicon-based biological construct who spent millennia drifting through the ruins of humanity before being reunited with her sister. She acts as the grounded, pragmatic anchor of the team, constantly balancing Anja's ideological fervor with the harsh realities of survival. Her combat prowess is enhanced by a cybernetic arm she retrieves from a Kitan armory, allowing her to channel plasma arcs. Despite her cynical exterior, she harbors a deep sense of responsibility for the innocent lives caught in their wake, eventually risking the Grand Design to save the refugees of Elpis.
Anja is Jesri's sister and a fellow military construct who remains deeply anchored to her original purpose of defeating the Gestalt. Unlike Jesri, she is willing to make horrific, utilitarian sacrifices for the mission, including the mercy-killing of an innocent alien family on Harsi and the execution of their sister Eleanor on Redoubt. Her unwavering commitment to the cry of Terra Invicta drives the team forward, though she grapples with the creeping mental instability caused by her unlocked neural link.
Qktk is a multi-eyed, insectoid Htt merchant who is dragged into the constructs' galactic war after his ship is commandeered. Though he initially prides himself on his mediocrity and cautious trading instincts, his interactions with the humans force him to look beyond his narrow horizon. He develops a shrewd ability to navigate the complex social hierarchies of the Ysleli and the station guilds. His evolution culminates in his heroic decision to stay behind on the dying Elpis station, sacrificing his life to keep the escape gates open for thousands of refugees.
