A hundred-meter pile of dirt wakes up in a drained lakebed, and the first thing he does is accidentally bury two armies. The Farkeath magicians spent a nation's worth of resources to create the one-use scroll called Divine Deliverance. Their apprentice mage Alre watches it descend on General Gáth Ionwoad's Syscilus army, sure of victory. Instead of striking the cavalry, the divine lightning hits the Ancient Lake, cracks the earth, and drags a sleeping colossus out of his pond. When the enormous earth elemental stands up, he sees the elves as tiny elementals and laughs in joy. When he takes his first step, the brittle bedrock collapses for five kilometers around him, pouring dirt and stone over both kingdoms' soldiers. The war he woke up to ends before a single cavalry charge.
This is not an underdog chosen by a god. This is the smallest elemental of the First Age, born from ordinary dirt while his brothers and sisters towered thousands of meters high. After the elementals died, their World Essence split into two forces. A portion became the gods who shape each new Age, but the greater portion became the System, a rulemaking entity that governs status screens, titles, evolution, and even restricts the gods themselves. The System is the true authority of this world. It lets living beings ascend only when they earn it, and it rewards the Colossus for fumbling a greeting by turning five kilometers of battlefield into a sinkhole. His status screen names him Primordial Elemental, grants him the titles Primordial and Earth Shaper, and then reveals his Unique Trait, Colossal Dream, which promises to evolve him beyond his limits. The trigger is not a sword or a spell. The trigger is a lonely creature's lifelong desire to be something more than the dirt under the feet of colossi, and the System decides his dream is worth a thousand-year sleep. He reads the screen, smiles, and closes his eyes. By the time he wakes, the lush continent of Zanthia is a volcanic wasteland and everyone he met is long dead.
It looks like I finally have a chance.
Colossus' Dream
General Gáth raises his hand to order the charge, but the Farkeath magicians have already unleashed Divine Deliverance. The spell misses its target, hits the Ancient Lake, and Col emerges as a shadow that blocks out the sun. Alre screams, and the whole battlefield freezes. The reversal is brutal. Neither army loses to the other's magic or cavalry. They lose because a gentle giant wants to walk over and help the small creatures he believes are hurt. One misplaced foot penetrates the loose bedrock, and a five-kilometer radius of earth cascades inward. The war-winning scroll does not conquer anyone, the General's horses do not trample anyone, and the Colossus ends up buried in his own "oops." Yet his panic fades when the blue screen appears. He learns his race, his titles, and his unique trait. Earth Shaper was granted because he changed the shape of large terrain relative to his size, which is the System's polite way of saying he destroyed a battlefield. The Colossus laughs at the titles, but Colossal Dream gives him something no other elemental ever had, a concrete path to becoming what he wanted. He chooses to sleep for a thousand years to complete the evolution. The hook lives in that choice. Every future power he earns will come at the price of the people he leaves behind.
The System turns an accidental catastrophe into a chance for a lonely primordial to evolve, but the price is sleeping through every age.
A thousand years later, Col wakes 150 meters tall with granite skin, finds the world reduced to black volcanic rock, and follows a bird to the ocean. He decides to walk across the seafloor to another continent. That decision drags him into the abyss, where he falls through the Cunning Burrows Dungeon ceiling and crushes Xikshu, the legendary Naga boss. Xikshu's final act is lodging his golden spear into Col's granite foot, and Col does not even notice. Further below, two mermen, Merrick and a doomed scout, face a fifty-meter mutant octopus crawling out of a demon portal. The Colossus lands directly on the octopus, squashes it, and then apologizes for breaking the mermen's "light." Merrick, desperate and bleeding, asks this walking mountain to close the other demon portals. Col agrees because he likes helping. He carries hundreds of mermen on his shoulders, slams his granite arm between the demons and the defenders, and folds each portal in on itself with a push. The mermen watch their generations-long curse end in hours. Col climbs the cliff, misses the warmth of the sun, and falls face-first into a beach with Xikshu's spear still wedged in his foot. That jutting spear will pull his first true companion to him centuries later.
Col accidentally saves the mermen, earns Ocean Treader, and leaves behind the spear that will draw his first companion.
The spear waits in the sand, and a young Goliath named Zohn sees it during a feast. Bizag the hunter says no one can pull it out, and the village loses interest. Zohn does not. He trains alone for decades, becomes the strongest hunter, retires to the granite formation, and builds his house on it. On his seventieth birthday, Col wakes again, now 300 meters tall and made of granite with water flowing through his body. Zohn watches his house rise into the sky on the giant's shoulder, and instead of running, he asks to join the guardian of the spear. The Colossus, who thinks Zohn is a tiny elemental, accidentally knocks Zohn's house off his shoulder and then builds him a granite fortress as an apology. When Zohn finally asks for the spear, Col pulls it out of his foot, and the System responds with thunder. Zohn receives the Eternal Companion title, which grants him immortality as long as he stays near Col. That vow rewrites his entire fate. Col then feels a pull toward the volcano at the continent's center, passes through a bubble portal to a realm of elemental rivers, gets rejected by the realm, and climbs to the volcano's peak. He sits down in a lava lake, cools the magma around his body, earns the Volcanic Master title, and begins another thousand-year evolution. Zohn plants a single seed on Col's shoulder and settles in to watch over his sleeping friend.
Zohn's vow makes him immortal beside Col, and Col's volcano evolution forces a thousand years of separation that Zohn uses to grow.
Col finally wakes, tears the volcano apart, and stands before a human city that has grown in his shadow. His reunion with Zohn is warm, but a storm sent by the goddess Natine strikes the land. Col earns the Storm Emperor title and enters another sleep, and Zohn's Eternal Companion title evolves into Eternal Champion, letting the two slumber side by side for nine hundred years. When Zohn wakes, he finds a world island covered in spirits, a giant tree named Jeffery, and an avian explorer named Achous who has spent twenty years building a flower garden. Zohn, now a Spirit Guardian Goliath, fights off Natine with a single spear thrust, and she retreats to warn the other gods. The gods answer by gathering their full power to erase the island. Zohn drains all his spirit essence to wake Col early and collapses in his courtyard. The Colossus rises ten kilometers tall, breaks the gods' barrier with one punch, and finds Zohn's body dead. His grief is stopped by a golden barrier and a voice that reveals herself as Fate, the creator of the System. She tells Col that Zohn's soul is tied to him and will wake again. Then she lifts Col into orbit and reshapes his body into a perfect sphere. The last living elemental becomes the moon, with Zohn sleeping at his center and a world tree named Jeffery on his surface, watching over the perfect world forever.
The gods' attack kills Zohn's body, Fate reveals his soul is tied to Col, and Col becomes the moon.
Col starts as a hundred-meter earth elemental made from ordinary dirt, the smallest of his species and the only one with a dream. His unique trait, Colossal Dream, lets him evolve whenever he earns a title, and he grows from granite to water to mithril to a ten-kilometer titan. He calls every living being a tiny elemental, apologizes to demons he accidentally kills, and treats the goddess Natine's attack as a rude interruption. His bond with Zohn gives him the first friend he has ever had, and his grief at losing Zohn is what finally brings Fate into the open. He ends as the moon, orbiting the world he once dreamed of embodying.
Zohn spends seventy years obsessing over the spear stuck in Col's foot, trains alone in self taught spear arts, and retires to guard the weapon. When Col wakes, Zohn asks to travel with him and receives the Eternal Companion title, which makes him immortal near Col and later evolves into Eternal Champion. He guards Col through a thousand-year volcano sleep, plants the forest on Col's back, trains Dawkin, and builds a city's worth of friendship. At the end he gives all his spirit essence to wake Col early and dies to the gods' attack, with Fate promising his soul will return.
Fate reveals herself only after the gods attack Col and Zohn, claiming she has guided Col from birth and that he is her firstborn. She explains that the System was made to guide the gods indirectly and that each Age was a trial run for a perfect world. When Zohn's body dies, Fate assures Col that Zohn's soul is still alive and will wake. She then launches Col into orbit and turns him into the moon, placing Zohn and the spirit forest at his core and declaring the final piece of her plan complete.
