Threshold City rises like a scar on a newborn continent, a fortress of concrete and mana where the kaiju wall cuts the sky into a black collar. Here, baselines like Nestra Palladian are the forgotten scaffolding of a civilization built by gleams, the mana-wielding elite who dance through portals and harvest alien riches. Nestra is a walking contradiction: a woman with a full mana circuit yet no core, a failed heir to a powerful gleam family, now a MaxSec officer in patched armor chasing thieves through neon-lit slums. Her body craves mana like a drug, a hunger that gnaws at her bones, yet every portal she approaches offers only a fleeting taste of relief. She is a ghost in her own skin, envying the very criminals she pursues. When a rogue gleam named Fox Mask escapes into a portal, Nestra feels the mana wash over her, a moment of bliss that vanishes as quickly as it came. That night, during the brutal purge of District Fifteen, she kills a gleam in self-defense, her blade cracking his skull. In that instant, something awakens. Her gray skin, black eyes, and sharp teeth emerge from a mask she never knew she wore. The mana cravings cease. She is no longer human. She is a changeling, a gray demon, and her true hunt has just begun.
The world Nestra inhabits is a brutal fusion of cyberpunk grit and portal fantasy wonder. Augmented criminals with wired reflexes clash against sword-wielding baselines. Corpo guilds like Gidung manipulate governments for profit, while ancient demons lurk in the shadows of bakeries. The incursion brought mana and monsters, but also the seeds of a new species. Nestra’s awakening is not a blessing but a revelation of a cosmic deception: she is the offspring of a demon who raped her mother while wearing her father’s face. Her entire identity as a failed gleam was a lie crafted by her own biology. Now, with a void shark as a reluctant pet and a demon mentor named Seth who bakes pastries, she must navigate a path between two worlds. She is a hunter who grows stronger with every kill, a predator in a city of prey, and the only thing standing between her and the truth is the next portal, the next battle, the next meal.
I am what I am. And who I am.
Changeling
The night of the purge in District Fifteen becomes Nestra’s rebirth. Her squad is decimated by augmented gangers supplied by Gidung. Bard, her teammate, betrays them for a retirement fund. Nestra kills him with a bullet through the chest, then faces the rogue gleam who orchestrated the ambush. Using her sword and a stolen moment of clarity, she decapitates him. The moment his body falls, a wave of mana floods her, and she feels her true form crack through the human mask. Gray skin, black eyes, horns, and serrated teeth. The cravings vanish. She is no longer a baseline; she is a demon. The next morning, she finds a package with a mask and a note from a mysterious benefactor. She learns to hide her true self, but the hunger for power remains. She begins raiding portals, killing monsters, and selling loot through the black market. Each kill makes her stronger, faster, more resilient. The world she thought she knew is a cage, and she has just found the key.
Nestra's first kill triggers her demonic awakening, setting her on a path of power and vengeance.
Partnered with the aging detective Shinoda, Nestra is assigned to District Fifteen to investigate Gidung’s role in the purge. They uncover a hidden safe house, a data drive with mana readings, and a conspiracy to exploit a dragon vein. The augmented gang leader Cleaver targets them for the drive. In a brutal ambush, Nestra uses her human form’s tricks—EMP grenades, a custom revolver, and her sword—to hold him off until Valerian, a life gleam, arrives. Cleaver is killed, but the drive reveals the truth: Gidung’s executive Watkins orchestrated the purge to secure the mana river. Nestra’s squad was collateral damage. The city moves to arrest Watkins, but the Kaiju attack, triggered by Gidung’s tampering, throws everything into chaos. Shinoda dies in the tunnels, leading civilians to safety. Nestra, exhausted and wounded, faces a horde alone, her demon form emerging to slaughter dozens of monsters. Valerian sees her true face. The secret is out.
Nestra uncovers Gidung's plot and loses her partner, forcing her to reveal her demon form to a trusted ally.
The Kaiju breaches the wall, and Nestra fights through the tunnels to save civilians. She kills a shadow beast with a final demon bolt, then collapses. Valerian brings her to a shelter where Doctor Mazingwe, the legendary Dawn Spear, confronts her. He recognizes her as a gray demon from classified records. Before he can act, Seth, the baker, reveals himself as a full-blooded demon. He forces Mazingwe to swear secrecy, then takes Nestra through a portal to his home. There, she learns the truth: she is a changeling, the child of a demon who raped her mother. Her core was cannibalized to survive Earth’s low mana. Seth is her mentor, sent by a coven of demon women to guide her. He teaches her to form a physical core, to master her abilities, and to embrace her nature. But the cost is high: she must keep her identity hidden, even from her family. The Kaiju’s aftermath leaves District Fifteen in ruins, but Nestra has a new purpose. She will hunt those who wronged her, grow stronger, and maybe, one day, confront the father who abandoned her.
Nestra learns her true demonic heritage and gains a mentor, setting the stage for her rise as a hunter.
With the conspiracy exposed and Watkins in custody, Nestra faces a choice: let the city handle justice or take it herself. Kim, Shinoda’s lover, hints that Watkins will be moved and that an assassination attempt is possible. Nestra, now aware of her demonic abilities, decides to act. She tracks the Gidung hit squad to an unfinished tower, using her void powers to disable their remote rifle. In a confrontation with the runner, a heavily augmented woman, Nestra fights in her human form, using her sword and new skills. The runner is killed, and the assassination is thwarted. Watkins is secured, and Gidung’s plans are ruined. Nestra returns to the precinct for Shinoda’s funeral, where she meets Kim. They share a moment of grief and resolve. Nestra’s future is uncertain: she has a demon mentor, a growing power, and a list of enemies. But she also has allies—Valerian, Gorge, Stib, and even Mazingwe. She is no longer alone. The changeling has found her pack.
Nestra thwarts Gidung's final play and honors Shinoda, solidifying her role as a protector and hunter.
Nestra begins as a baseline with mana cravings, a failed gleam heir scraping by as a cop. After killing a rogue gleam, she awakens as a gray demon, gaining superhuman strength, speed, and void abilities. She raided portals to grow stronger, uncovering a conspiracy by Gidung corporation that led to her squad's death. Partnered with detective Shinoda, she exposed the plot, killed the augmented gang leader Cleaver, and survived a Kaiju attack. She learned her true origins from the demon Seth: she is a changeling, child of a demon who raped her mother. Now she balances human and demon identities, seeking justice for her fallen comrades while mastering her powers. Her trump card is her adaptability—she can switch between human mask and demon form, use void blades, momentum, precision, and immovable abilities. She is driven by hunger for power and a desire to protect those she cares about.
Seth is a full-blooded gray demon who has lived among humans for years, running a bakery as a cover. He was sent by a coven of demon women to guide Nestra after her awakening. He provided her with Kero nuts, training manuals (the Scornful Crescent), and tactical support, including disabling cameras and cleaning up bodies. He is immensely powerful, claiming to be stronger than Shinran, Threshold's A-class guardian. His true nature is hidden behind a human mask, but he reveals himself to protect Nestra from Mazingwe. He is playful and eccentric, obsessed with human cooking and culture, but also ruthless when threatened. He serves as Nestra's mentor, teaching her to form a core and sparring with her. His loyalty is to the coven and to Nestra as the first female changeling of human descent. He is also dating Stib, Nestra's friend, which creates tension. His trump card is his raw power and knowledge of demon society, though he is bound by rules not to coddle Nestra.
Shinoda is a baseline detective with damaged lungs, brought out of retirement by Kim to work in District Fifteen. He is a calm, wise figure who uses de-escalation and empathy to handle conflicts. He lost his son to gang violence, which drives his commitment to justice. He partners with Nestra, trusting her combat skills while he handles diplomacy. Together they uncover Gidung's conspiracy, but he is killed during the Kaiju attack while leading civilians to safety. His death deeply affects Nestra and Kim. He represents the best of humanity: selfless, principled, and caring. His trump card is his experience and ability to read people, though his physical frailty limits him. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity that Nestra carries forward.
