The moon is a lie, a shattered mask over the Demon City of Arakino, and Earth has never been the same since Neil Armstrong broke the Veil in 1969. In the century since mana flooded the Two Worlds, humanity learned one brutal truth: the Tutorial is the only doorway to real power, and most people walking through it wake up as brawnies, strong but ordinary, forever chained to the bottom of the power scale. Mark Careed refuses to accept that fate. A normal eighteen-year-old from Orange City in the drowned Floridas, he trains for years, devours every combat elective, and passes his False Tutorial with a speed that shocks even the priest who reads his results. His reward is a paper that confirms the worst possible outcome: a ninety-five percent chance of becoming a brawny, the very destiny he despises.
But desperation opens doors that prudence would keep sealed. When an archmage of legend, Sloane Addashield, a Hero of Humanity whose demon contract demands he raise apprentices, learns of Mark's latent compatibility, he offers the boy a path beyond the mundane: adamantiumkinesis, the power to control the hardest metal in existence, fused with healing magic from the goddess Freyala. Mark accepts with his whole heart, knowing the price will be pain, knowing recovery will be brutal, knowing nothing prepares him for the truth. Addashield is not a savior; he is a predator running out of time, and when the betrayal comes, it comes with a severed head and a demon's laughter, proving that in the world of Adamant Blood, every gift is a trap, and every hero has a price tag written in blood.
Demons can’t be reasoned with, Mark. Don’t try to reason with them, and never believe what they say.
Adamant Blood
The first foundation of Mark's legend is built on ashes. Addashield, desperate to fulfill his demonic contract, attunes Mark's mana channels and then, when his true apprentice dies in the Tutorial, drags Mark into a scheme that ends with Mark in a healing coma, shattering his body, his future, and his family's peace. The medical cataclysm steals months of his life, and the world moves on without him, leaving him a ninety-five-pound ghost in his own childhood home just as his eighteenth birthday arrives.
Mark survives a brutal magical betrayal that costs him his health, months, and innocence, buying power with pain.
On the day of his real Tutorial, Mark walks into a storm of goblins, invisible skeleton slimes, trap corridors, and a living armor that hunts him across a collapsing aqueduct, all while Addashield hovers unseen, giving hints and waiting for the final play. Mark kills, climbs, and survives through sheer stubborn skill, believing he is reclaiming his destiny. But when he touches the prismatic mana, the demon Kanda strikes, and Addashield is forced to make an impossible choice, sacrificing himself to bind Kanda into a new form that will haunt Mark forever.
Mark passes the Tutorial only to discover his victory transforms Addashield into a High Dragon, compounding his trauma.
Mark awakens from his Ascension to find his home in flames, his parents incinerated by the man he trusted, and a High Dragon roaring above the hurricane. The world shifts beneath his feet as Addashield's dragon begins a redemption campaign, gifting thousands of kilos of adamantium, killing kaiju, and building walls of protection, turning the monster into an international hero. Mark is left with grief, rage, and the cruel knowledge that everyone else sees this as the best possible outcome, including the priests who guard him.
Mark loses his parents and discovers his enemy is becoming a celebrated defender of humanity, complicating revenge.
In the Citadel of Freyala, Mark begins the long work of rebuilding, learning Union, sparring with future paladins, and struggling to find hope amid his social anxiety and hatred. He is placed under observation, offered training missions, and introduced to the social circles of the powerful, all while the dragon that wears his enemy's face calls him brother. Mark's path becomes clear: grow strong, form a team, and one day become someone who can decide the fate of monsters, not be decided by them.
Mark reframes his revenge into a lifelong mission of strength, forming bonds and skills in a sanctuary.
Mark is the heart of the story, a boy who wanted to be special and paid for it with his body and family. His ascension grants him the tri-Talent of Healthy Body, Adamantiumkinesis, and Union, making him a rare powerhouse, but his emotional scars run deeper than any wound. He channels his hatred of Addashield's Dragon into a drive for self-improvement, learning healing magic, sparring, and social etiquette, all while struggling to trust authority and find friends. His growth is defined by his ability to keep moving forward despite overwhelming loss.
Addashield is a Hero of Humanity with three hundred years of service, but his demonic contract poisons every noble act. He uses Mark as a tool to salvage his failing obligations, nearly murders him at the Ascension altar, and ultimately kills Mark's parents to deny his demon leverage. When he finally merges with Kanda to become a High Dragon, the resulting entity begins a new life as a force of atonement, gifting adamantium and slaying kaiju, forcing the world to accept the monster as a savior.
Lola is the woman who accidentally contributed to Mark's coma and carries that guilt forever. As his Union instructor, she guides him through breathing exercises, heart-linkage magic, and the dangerous territory of astral power. She balances Xerkona-honored strictness with genuine care, pushing Mark toward social clubs and training missions so he can find a place in the world. Her belief in his potential gives Mark structure when his rage would otherwise consume him.
