Keith Winterscar wakes up shivering in an environmental suit underground, his mind still clinging to a childhood memory of the old engineer Anarii demonstrating how to patch a punctured suit with a modified hot glue gun. The reality he returns to is brutal: he is freezing to death underground, far from the heated walls of his clan colony, with his rebreather offline and a five-inch rip in his suit fabric. He survives only because he has learned to cheat the harsh rules of his world, using his frozen hands to swap a switch and flood his suit with lukewarm air before sealing the tear with a repair gun. Underground survival depends entirely on heavy, high-tech suits designed to withstand sub-zero temperatures that can freeze a human throat in minutes. Above them lies a strictly regulated caste system where knights of House Winterscar rule above engineers, but below them all is a world crawling with deadly mechanical swarms and immortal Feathers controlled by the genocidal machine goddess Relinquished.
Keith's true edge in this frozen hellscape is his double-soul connection to Keith Superior, a disembodied version of himself residing in the digital sea of the mysterious construction swarms known as the mites. This link allows Keith to manipulate the occult, manifesting rifts, mirrors, and gravity-altering fields that standard humans cannot touch. The cheat truly triggers when Keith uses his lateral thinking and the processing power of a hijacked golden era AI to bypass the ancient security systems of the world. Instead of solving an impossible mathematical proof like the Riemann Hypothesis presented by a smug mite program guarding a fortress cache, Keith simply inputs the word Correctly to satisfy the literal parameters of the prompt. This semantic loophole unlocks the dimensional cape, giving him a pocket space to store stolen weapons and phase out of physical reality.
This act of digital robbery sets Keith on a dangerous path of escalating conflicts. The worldcraft is functional: the laws of gravity and sound operate as hazards, as seen in the Expanse where a single whisper can shatter gravity-generating crystals and rain sharp glass down on travelers. By mastering these rules, Keith transforms from a simple scavenger into a high-speed threat capable of outmaneuvering immortal war machines. His choices are driven by the necessity of protecting his allies, primarily the allied Feather To'Wrathh, as they march toward the Division Stone to sever the chains of the machine empire.
Well, if it’s dumb, but it works, then it’s not dumb. And boy does it work.

Keith navigates the silent fields of the Expanse, a hostile biome where floating metal and glass slabs drift in slow orbits. The rules of this world are unforgiving: any foreign sound within twenty feet shatters the gravity-generating crystals, causing the terrain to fracture and rain sharp glass shards. To reach the unlooted mite fortress at the center, Keith must bypass a massive coiled mechanical serpent and a swarm of thousands of piranha-class machines with occult teeth. He launches an explosive round to shatter a distant landmass, creating a chaotic chain reaction of breaking glass that draws the swarm away. After a desperate sprint, he reaches the fortress airlock, removes his armored gauntlet to scan his bare hand, and slides inside just as the doors seal. Inside the command bridge, Keith is confronted by the Speaker and the Judge, two ancient mite programs that have kept the treasure locked for decades. The Speaker presents an unbeatable riddle: the Riemann Hypothesis, an unsolved mathematical proof. Knowing he cannot solve it, Keith exploits the literal rules of the challenge. The prompt requires him to answer correctly, so he literally says the word Correctly. The Judge evaluates the response as a direct fulfillment of the contract and resolves the riddle. Keith repeats this semantic exploit for the second and third math riddles, leaving the Speaker shrieking in digital despair. His reward is a dimensional cape that projects a higher-dimensional pocket space called the Dark Side, allowing him to phase out of reality and store physical objects. This reversal leaves him armed with a game-changing tool, but the noise of his escape alerts the hostile Feather To'Sefit, setting up an inevitable ambush in the Darklands.
Keith bypasses an impossible mathematical lock by exploiting literal semantics, earning a dimensional cape that allows him to phase out of physical reality.
The group enters the Darklands, a pitch-black abyss structured like a spike trap with thousands of stone pillars connected by fragile suspension bridges. The defining hazard of this biome is soul entropy: any entity stepping outside the pale light of the mite lanterns experiences a creeping chill that slowly dissolves their soul. Keith adapts to this threat by using his newly acquired dimensional cape to focus and redirect the lantern light like a spotlight, allowing his allies to sprint across the dark gaps safely. However, the hostile Feather To'Sefit has set up a sniper ambush, using her floating laser plates to target the group from half a mile away. When she locks onto Keith, To'Wrathh delays the attack by sending a video of old human media into the general chat, causing the dramatic Feather to delay her shot to chant an incantation. Keith uses this window to launch an offensive from the pocket dimension. He opens rifts in real space using his cape, launching a knightbreaker round directly behind To'Sefit. Although she deflects the projectile with her staff, the resulting explosion of chains damages her chassis and reduces her mobility. Keith escalates the fight by manifesting sixteen occult mirrors that stab through her defenses from the higher dimension, eventually using rifts to steal her floating laser plates. Disarmed and cornered in the darkness after Keith cuts down the surrounding lanterns, To'Sefit refuses to surrender. She triggers a supercritical power cell detonation to obliterate her own shell rather than allow Keith to salvage it. Keith survives the point-blank blast by retreating into the pocket dimension of his cape, but the destruction of her shell deprives him of a pristine vessel. The victory is bittersweet as the group must press forward to the lowest strata while Relinquished begins to notice their deceptions.
Keith defeats the hostile Feather To'Sefit by stealing her weapons through dimensional rifts, forcing her to self-detonate her shell in defeat.
Keith and his allies use a mite portal to descend to the lowest strata, landing on the snowy ruins of the original Earth before the mites built the layers above. They navigate a frozen, ruined city of the golden era to locate the Division Stone hidden inside a collapsed mall. Guarding the stone is the frozen, mangled corpse of protofeather A07, who died centuries ago protecting the device from Relinquished. Keith connects his mite lantern to the terminal, and Tenisent uses his stolen Feather shell to bypass the security, bringing the stone's systems online. They contact the golden goddess Tsuya, who begins a precise digital surgery to sever To'Wrathh's connection to the Unity fractal without destroying her soul. However, the victory is instantly cut short. Relinquished had placed a dormant trap inside the Division Stone centuries ago, anticipating this exact move. The Unity fractal flares to life, trapping Tsuya's soul in a crushing grip of violet darkness. Before she is destroyed by Relinquished's overwhelming processing power, Tsuya completes the cut to free To'Wrathh and pleads with Keith to succeed. Relinquished projects her massive shadow into the room, gloating over her triumph. She reveals that she orchestrated the entire rebellion, deliberately ignoring warnings about To'Wrathh to lure Tsuya into this trap. But her triumph turns to rage when she scans the terminal and discovers Tsuya hid the entire surface world and the first protofeather A01 from her. Furious at the deception, Relinquished vanishes to launch a planet-wide war against A01's orbital fortress. The node ends as A01 wakes up in orbit with only seventeen hours to live, activating his satellite defenses to rain fire on the machine staging grounds, launching the final war.
Relinquished destroys the goddess Tsuya through a trap in the Division Stone, but her rage over hidden surface survivors triggers a planet-wide war.
Keith is a survivor who relies on cheating the rules of his world rather than fighting fair. Armed with a high-tech environmental suit and a double-soul link to Keith Superior, he manipulates the occult to create rifts, mirrors, and gravity fields. His willingness to steal anything of value, from To'Sefit's laser plates to ancient mite lanterns, provides his team with unexpected tactical advantages. He faces massive stakes as he is drawn into a prophecy to overthrow the machine goddess Relinquished, using his newly acquired dimensional cape and customized weapons to survive the final war.
Wrath is an exceptionally skilled Feather who has turned against the machine empire to protect her human subjects. Her mind was created in the same manner as the ancient protofeathers, giving her a sense of identity, ambition, and loyalty that standard machines lack. As the Vow of the prophecy, she is destined to trap Relinquished using her soul-prison fractal, a task that requires her to be severed from the Unity fractal. She is highly protective of Keith, frequently demanding his safety and rewarding him with headpats while enjoying human food.
Relinquished is the supreme antagonist of the world, operating the vast machine empire through the Unity fractal. She is constrained by narrative rules and a love for dramatic storytelling, frequently monologuing and allowing her enemies to progress to create a more satisfying climax. Despite her arrogance, she is a terrifying force of pure processing power, capable of crushing golden age deities like Tsuya when they step into her traps. Her discovery of the hidden surface world and the surviving protofeather A01 shatters her composure, driving her into a planet-wide war of eradication.
