The known galaxy is dominated by the Terran Galactic Sovereignty, a xenophobic, expansionist human empire that subjugates alien species through conquest and enslavement. Non-human species, such as the Twi’ll, are often stripped of their cultural identity and treated as property. The Sovereignty’s military, the Terran Galactic Navy, is the primary instrument of its control. Faster-than-light travel is achieved via jump-gates for safe, predictable jumps, or through the risky Sylas-Karzen (S-K) drive which allows a ship to "Burst," performing a random, uncontrollable hyperspace jump by overloading its engine. Human society is rigidly hierarchical, with immense wealth concentrated among noble families and the upper echelons of the Sovereignty council. Morally grey trade, political corruption, and unchecked corporate power are rampant.
Beyond Sovereignty space lies a chaotic mix of independent systems, pirate havens, and ancient, forgotten worlds. The Držić galaxy, for example, is a lawless region locked in perpetual conflict. The universe is also haunted by older, extinct races whose legacies—in the form of cryptic prophecies and devastating technologies—continue to shape the present. One such ancient race, the Shixses, was a eugenicist civilization that was driven to extinction by a coalition of "lesser races." Their final act was to seed a prophecy across the galaxy to lure a successor species to their homeworld of Petrarch, hoping to continue their legacy of genetic manipulation.

The narrative begins with the protagonist, a disgraced galactic noble, recounting his life. After a turbulent childhood, he and his siblings are sent to the Terran Galactic Naval Academy. A training mission on Lanan P-10 is ambushed by a band of warrior women, the Acarhyn, who abduct the protagonist’s sister, Eva. Refusing to accept the Sovereignty’s inaction, the protagonist leads a mutiny, commandeering a ship and escaping with a small crew. Their quest to find Eva leads them across the galaxy, where they encounter pirate lords, crime syndicates, and an ancient conspiracy centered on a cryptic "Prophecy." They eventually locate Eva, who has been made the reluctant "Virgin Queen" of the Acarhyn on their hidden planet Erigone. Here, they become entangled in a power struggle between the warrior and priestess castes. The search for the prophecy’s meaning reveals that the Sovereignty’s council, the protagonist’s own father Agust, and a cult leader known as the Confessor are all racing to find its source: a gateway on the planet Taagmar. The crew steals the Key to this gateway and follows the trail to the ruins of the Shixses empire on Petrarch. There, they discover the prophecy was a lure to recruit new subjects for the Shixses’ eugenics program. Agust and the Confessor corner them, using Eva as the key to unlock the genetic database. They forcibly subject Eva to the Shixses' extraction process, killing her and her unborn child. In a rage, the protagonist attacks Agust during the procedure, causing a catastrophic feedback event that knocks him unconscious. He awakens to find Eva dead, the temple consoles destroyed, and his father’s forces having retreated with the now-comatose Agust, who suffered a heart attack after the procedure’s power surge.
The primary route branch involves the power struggle on Erigone. The player must choose to support Rahia (Warrior Caste) or Erylin (Priestess Caste), or remain independent, directly influencing the outcome of the Hunt and the subsequent political landscape. A successful Hunt earns the title "Hero of the Acarhyn." In the final version, the "Endings" are determined by the player's romantic choices and their final decision on the Shixses temple.
