The central setting is an ether-pocket construct, referred to as the House, which exists within the ether between worlds. It is a manifestation of the protagonist's power, taking the form of a suburban house and its immediate surroundings, including a backyard and a pool. The physical laws of the House are malleable; it is capable of generating new rooms, items, and even tools from the memories or desires of its inhabitants, such as a library, a garage workshop, and personal bedrooms.
Socially, the House serves as a neutral refuge. It is populated by individuals from various disparate worlds, including infernals, humans, elves, and dwarves, who have been involuntarily pulled into it. The group operates as a de facto household, bound by the shared goal of escaping the ether pocket and returning to their respective homes, but they generally coexist with a sense of camaraderie and mutual tolerance.
The ether itself is the fundamental energy of the multiverse, acting as both the medium for magic and a source of power for the House. Etherwalking is the primary method of travel between worlds, requiring a powerful ether-attuned individual (the protagonist) to breach the barriers. While the House is rich in ether, it paradoxically makes performing complex magic difficult, and the ether in a "lost" world like Earth is described as "rough," draining the power and lifespan of ether-dependent beings like infernals. This universe is also governed by a complex political landscape, with the "Eternal Edicts" serving as a primary source of conflict, especially the forced prohibition of male Infernal offspring. A secret faction within Infernal society seeks to circumvent this Edict by creating a pure male Infernal to restore their kind to power.

The protagonist is a human from a "lost world" (Earth) who is pulled into a pocket dimension—the House—along with the succubus Azraesha, who was attempting to find him. The narrative begins with the protagonist and Azraesha navigating their new reality, his growing power, and the arrival of other displaced individuals: the mage student Caitlin, the elf Lyriel, the pirate Naomi, the dwarf mechanic Blair, and the shaman Yona. The central conflict emerges as the protagonist learns of the ongoing, secret war fought by the Infernal race against the Magi Coalition, which seeks to subjugate them. Azraesha is revealed to be a member of a covert organization aiming to restore her people. The plot progresses through a series of personal quests and world-building episodes: Azraesha reconnects with her mentor, Sirenia; Caitlin struggles to find her place and eventually begins to research her missing parents; Lyriel, Naomi, and Blair are given their own character arcs as they grapple with their pasts and current circumstances. The story's climax occurs as the protagonist and Azraesha confront her old mentor, Mikhaella, and learn the true nature of her past, forcing her to choose between her old allegiances and her new life in the House. Concurrently, Caitlin's quest to understand her parents' disappearance leads her to discover the small dragon Orvin, the last link to them. The overarching narrative is one of found family, self-discovery, and the choices individuals make when faced with difficult truths.
This path focuses on Azraesha's struggle with her past and her dual loyalties. Key choices involve deciding whether to trust her as she reveals her involvement with an Infernal conspiracy, culminating in her final confrontation with her former allies. The route's emotional core is her choice between duty to her people and her new life with the protagonist, leading to either a romantic conclusion or a bittersweet parting.
This route is centered on Caitlin's journey to discover her identity and the fate of her parents. It involves breaking into a secret archive at her University, which results in a major failure that shakes her confidence. The critical branch occurs when she must confront her friends and the enigmatic Grandpa Cham, who holds a clue. The ending resolves with her gaining custody of Orvin, the dragon, as a symbol of her new quest for the truth.
Blair's story is about her loss of her crew and her inability to return to her world. This route is defined by the mystery of her ether-attunement, which is tied to a tragic explosion that killed her friends. Choices revolve around whether to help her uncover the truth or leave her to her denial. Her arc culminates in discovering a way to sense her homeworld's ether, setting the stage for her eventual return.
